I enjoy writing in creative sprints - a sort of Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound (S.M.A.R.T.) game I like to play when writing.
I have regularly written poems in 30 day blocks. Sometimes around a specific theme.
33 Lessons for 33 Years of Life was a creative sprints where I shared 33 ideas leading to my 33rd birthday.
Power Acronyms was another.
When I F.A.I.L.ed, I started to count the days it was going to take to write again, then thought it all pointless and stopped taking it all so seriously.
But I also wanted to take the opportunities to document what I was thinking and feeling as I experienced the end of my longest consecutive writing streak.
So I decided that when I returned to publishing Power Acronyms, I would write about the C.O.S.T.
Power Acronym 196: C.O.S.T.
Companion Of Successful Thinking
The truth is that there's no such thing as a free lunch.
No matter what your goal is, whether you want to get in better shape, make more money, have an amazing marriage…it comes with a price.
Brian Tracy has an excellent quote about this:
"Determine the price you will have to pay in additional work, time, and commitment to achieve your goal, and then get busy paying that price." - Brian Tracy
So you have a goal in mind, a target you'd like to hit. That's good!
Now remember the Companion Of Successful Thinking - the C.O.S.T.
As I was creating an image for this Power Acronym, I was reminded of a closing technique in sales called the “Ben Franklin Close”. Here’s the definition:
The Ben Franklin Close can be defined as a persuasive technique that involves presenting a balanced analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of a decision. This method encourages individuals to consider every aspect before making their final choice.
Successful people deploy logical and analytical thinking. Next time you have a decision to make, don’t fret over it. Make a list and reflect on the costs and benefits of making that decision.
Draw a line down the middle of a piece of paper. On the left, put “Pro’s”. On the right, put “Cons”.
Every word I publish is time and attention that could be spent doing something else.
But I gladly make the exchange because I believe in the power of an encouraging word and intentional thought.
Have a goal in mind? Determine what the price will be and pay it. Every day.
Pay the C.O.S.T. when the gains are greater than the “loss”.
