Yesterday I decided to venture to the bookstore to see what I could find.
I have a goal to read two books a month in 2023 which means I have some decisions to make about which books to read and when.
The business aisle is always my first place to search. Followed by Personal Development, Spirituality/Philosophy, Reference, Poetry, and by that time I have at least one to take home.
But that didn't happen. Yesterday, I came home empty-handed. But I did have a direction for what my reading will start with next year.
What does this have to do with communication?
As I was looking through the aisles I started to think about how shopping in a bookstore is almost the analog version of doom scrolling.
There I was, swiping through titles and tables of contents, dismissing hundreds of pages and thousands of hours of deep thought someone wrote and I'm sure a reader has gained a great deal from.
But as important as all that information is…it doesn't mean anything if it doesn't mean something to me, today.
Perhaps the best idea I got at the bookstore was how important the connection is between all the ideas (the books, videos, and memes) and the person on the receiving end.
So I’ve decided that I’ll start my 2023 reading plan by diving into some books that are already on my bookshelf. It’s time to finish and revisit some wisdom that’s already in all my favorite genres, waiting to be explored.
It’s amazing that we can communicate via live audio and video from virtually anywhere around the globe at a moment’s notice.
But we’ll always be inspired by ancient artwork.
What matters is what the communication means to those involved.
Here’s to a lifetime of learning how to communicate.
