Communication is a survival skill that, when developed, can help others thrive. Leaders Even prior to making it a part of my professional life, I had a love for language - from church hymns, to poetry, to hip hop music.
Taming the tongue is about being mindful of what we say to ourselves and others because, as my friend Travis M White likes to say, words create worlds.
The conversations we create and curate around us profoundly shape our life. Itâs as if what we think and say literally falls out of our mouths and becomes real. Whether weâre conscious of it or not. Whether we like it or not.
While exploring this idea, I felt inspired to make a distinction between the voices we use to speak to ourselves.
Hereâs a draft about the Vicious and Victorious voice in a first exploration of this idea:
This Vicious Voice says
âWho gave you the right to say this/do this?â
âDonât publish. It isnât good enough.â
âSilence is golden.â
This Vicious Voice loves to show up in a myriad of other ways, whether thatâs in a personal creative quest, task at work, or my relationships. It is the voice that keeps me judging, questioning, and help captive in fear.
Over time Iâve learned that the best way to mute the Vicious Voice is to raise my own until it is overwhelmed by what my inner victor is compelled to say.
The Victorious Voice answers
âI speak to serve others not myselfâ
âIf it helps one, it helps manyâ
âThe Truth will set you freeâ
âTrust thyselfâ
It is my hope that whatever stage of the journey your onâŠ
Beginning, middle, EndâŠ
Start up or Start over
Failing or ScalingâŠ
Hiring or FiringâŠ
Break up or Break throughâŠ
that you silence the Voice of Viciousness by listening to what the Voice of Victory has for you.
Join the encouraging, enriching and empowering conversations that lead to victory and avoid the untruth, gossip, and noise.
Here are 3 quotes that reinforce the idea:
âWe will always hear ourselves, but we do not have to listen.â
Proverbs 18:20-21:
20 From the fruit of their mouth a personâs stomach is filled; with the harvest of their lips they are satisfied.
21 The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.
âEvery decision you make makes an imprint on your consciousnessâ
